BALTIMORE – Fed Ex prides itself on reliability. But a mistaken delivery tipped off police to a 200-pound shipment of marijuana that someone tried to send from Pembroke Pines, Florida to Baltimore via the shipping company.

Police tell The (Baltimore) Sun they learned about the shipment when it was delivered Tuesday to the wrong resident.

Authorities posed as FedEx employees and arrested the shipment’s intended recipient, 30-year-old Richard Gwatidzo.

Officials say he was charged Thursday with possession of a large quantity of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute along with other drug related charges.

Police say they also seized eight other FedEx boxes with nearly 400 pounds of the drug.

Authorities are trying to determine the sender’s identity.

TOKYO (Reuters) – One of the travelers who arrived at Tokyo’s Narita airport over the weekend may have picked up an unusual souvenir from customs — a package of cannabis.

A customs official hid the package in a suitcase belonging to a passenger arriving from Hong Kong as a training exercise for sniffer dogs Sunday, but lost track of both drugs and suitcase during the practice session, a spokeswoman for Tokyo customs said.

Customs regulations specify that a training suitcase be used for such exercises, but the official said he had used passengers’ suitcases for similar purposes in the past, domestic media reported.

“The dogs have always been able to find it before,” NHK quoted him as saying. “I became overconfident that it would work.”

Anyone who finds the package should contact Tokyo customs as soon as possible, the spokeswoman said.

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – A New Zealand man had a novel idea when he found himself in a queue at a service station counter with no money, could he pay with marijuana instead?

Unfortunately he didn’t get a chance to discover whether the attendant would accept his offer, as the person behind him in the queue was a police officer, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.

The man’s attempt to buy two packets of M&Ms and a packet of potato chips to satisfy his “munchies” was caught short when he was arrested.

He must have been hungry, as he failed to notice the police patrol car sitting on the station forecourt being filled with petrol, the paper reported.

The 28-year old mechanic from the small North Island town of Carterton pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis in the Masterton District Court and was remanded for sentencing.

SYDNEY (Reuters) – An Australian man has found himself in trouble after calling police to report that his house had been broken into and some of his cannabis plants stolen.

The 35-year-old man from the southern city of Adelaide called police in the early hours of Tuesday after being woken by intruders who smashed a window and made off with portions of the plants.

Police were unable to locate the burglars but after searching the house, found six cannabis plants in the bedrooms. The man was arrested and charged with drug offenses, South Australian state police said in a statement.

“Members of the public are reminded that the growing of cannabis is not only illegal but can also attract other criminal activity such home break-ins and assaults,” the statement said.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A pot grower in northern California is following nature’s rules, if not the law. Workers who were sorting items at a San Jose recycling center last week found a large trash bag full of marijuana plants.

The center collects leaves, tree limbs and other natural material for composting, but San Jose police say the plants won’t end up that way. Instead they’ll be held as evidence of a crime.

Police say the marijuana could have come from anywhere in Santa Clara County. They don’t know how much of the pot in the bag was sell able.
